To understand how to rescue data from a broken or corrupted disc, it helps to know how they are constructed. A standard CD or DVD is not just a single piece of plastic. It consists of multiple layers:

The Polycarbonate Substrate: A thick, clear plastic bottom layer that protects the data and allows the laser to pass through.

Most disc reading issues happen because the clear polycarbonate plastic layer gets scratched. The laser in your computer drive needs to pass through this plastic cleanly, bounce off the internal metallic layer, and reflect back to a sensor. If the plastic is scratched, the laser gets refracted and scattered—like a car headlight hitting thick fog. The drive cannot read the data below, even though the data itself is perfectly intact.

Often referred to as "disc rot" or oxidation, this happens when oxygen and moisture penetrate the protective lacquer layer and cause the internal aluminum film to corrode. It usually looks like tiny pinholes or dark bronze discoloration when you hold the disc up to a light source.
